Night out at the Farm

Friday afternoon my dad came in and picked Ajax and I up!   My mom is in Florida visiting and Dave was going to be in a conference all day on Saturday in Detroit, so we decided to go stay the night in Brooklyn and hang with my dad.

After my dad picked us up we went to a tractor supply store so that my dad could get some parts for his New Holland.  We were there for about 40 minutes and Ajax was great the entire time.   He was of course great because we were in a store filled with tractors and lawn mowers.   Ajax tried out every single tractor multiple times and kept pointing out his favorite ones.   He even got a kick out of the snow blowers.

We then headed out to Brooklyn for the night.  Ajax was up at about 6:30 and my dad was nice enough to let me sleep in.   We did breakfast of french toast and then headed outside by 9 am!   Ajax pulled out his power wheel and zipped all around the farm, up and down the second drive and behind the big red barn.  He also decided to help grandpa by filling in a groundhog hole and made multiple trips with his  power wheel filled with dirt.  We also played in the sand pit behind the barn with all of Ajax’s metal trucks and made great roads and highways.   The animals followed Ajax everywhere he went, it was hilarious, the dogs, the cats, they followed him everywhere.

We then helped my dad take down a large tree near his pole barn.  By help I mean Ajax and I manned the tractor and simply put tension on the large limbs so that they fell the way my dad wanted.  Ajax got a kick out of that.  He also had fun jumping and climbing through the fallen tree and even got into a tug of war with one of the dogs over a large branch.

After our hard work my dad treated us to lunch at McDonalds where Ajax played quite well on the playscape.  As he was pretty overtired at that point, he didn’t leave terribly well, but in the car he finally calmed down when he asked to listen to the Beach Boys.   I asked Ajax if he really wanted to listen to the Beach Boys and he said yes.  My dad happened to have his iPod with several Beach Boy albums.   When I put them on he hummed along with it till he fell asleep.  I couldn’t believe it.

My guys to the rescue

Last night I was driving home, talking to my friend Erica, when all of a sudden I noticed a very loud thumping noise.  I thought it was the car next to me till I realized I wasn’t moving away from the noise and that the noise was actually getting louder.   I made my way to the shoulder of the expressway and told Erica I had to let her go, lol.   I had a flat tire.  Of course it was a brand new tire that we paid $100 less than a month ago, right.   I immediately called Dave and he said he was on his way.   To get Ajax motivated Dave explained to him that – momma’s car is stuck in the mud and we need to go help her!  Dave said that Ajax jumped off the couch and said, let’s go!

I sat in Dave’s car with Ajax while Dave put the spare on my car.  Not really how we planned on spending our evening as we didn’t get home till after 7:30 pm.  The whole time Dave was changing my tire Ajax chatted away.  Explaining how he and daddy were rescuing me, how my car was clearly stuck in the mud, and by the way- when were the tractors coming to pull the car out?   Ajax was very well behaved throughout the ordeal.

Quick shopping trip

I did a quick run to Kroger and just I’d share as I haven’t posted any coupon trips lately!  This trip wasn’t very flashy, but we are heading into cooler weather and that means soup season is upon us.

  • 4 cans of Swanson broth – $0.99/each
  • 4 boxes of Annie’s Mac and Cheese – $1.19/each
  • 4 boxes of Imagine chicken broth – $2.49/each

Weekend update

I awoke to the sing-songy voice of Ajax calling- I’m all done sleeping mom!  My first thought was- goodness, he sounds so happy.   I walked downstairs and found Ajax sitting up in bed saying how he was done sleeping and that he was done with his nap.   Try to explain, however, to an overtired and stubborn two-year old that it’s midnight and no one is up and about at midnight and to go back to sleep.    Ajax was up till 3 am.   I was so tired and frustrated that I finally laid on the couch with him.  He won.

It’s kind of funny how first-time parent’s have these grand ideas and plans of how they will raise their children.   They will do this, they won’t do that… then the baby comes and throws all your well-laid plans out the window, lol.   At 3 am, I didn’t really care about any of that, I just needed to sleep.   I was finally able to transfer Ajax into his bed wrapped in blanket where he slept till 7:45 am.

On Saturday Dave and I were beyond tired (more like a little nuts), we were so tired that I called my mom.  Yes, I did, I called my mom.   My mom was nice enough to come visiting and help take care of Ajax.   They played outside in the leaves and Ajax had so much fun playing with his grandma.  My mom even made us a delicious dinner… a recipe I actually wrote down and will share sometime.

Ajax slept through the night Saturday, but now I fear that he’s getting a cold.  Dave was sick last week with the flu and then had to go to Urgent Care on Saturday and is now on antibiotics for strep throat.

Today was pretty laid back.  Ajax and I went grocery shopping, then we swung home to pick up Dave and went to the mall.  Ajax played on the playscape for over an hour and then we bought Dave a down-filled vest.   Dave and Ajax then worked outside, while I got some cooking done inside.   Ajax was in bed by 7 pm and out like a light.

Italian Sausage Soup

I recently found this soup on allrecipes.com and highly recommend it.  I made it for Halloween the other night and the rest of my family enjoyed it as well.   Ajax even liked it.   The original recipe was for the stove, but I modified it for my crock pot.   Gotta love the crock pot!  I assume that everyone has at least one crock pot.  If you don’t have a crock pot, how do you survive?

  • 1 lb Italian sausage (I have made this with ground pork as well, which gives the soup a lighter taste.  The Italian sausage gives it a richer flavor- both good depending on what you’re looking for).
  • 1 clove garlic (I just used a small pinch of chopped garlic I had in the frig)
  • 2 cans beef broth (I added 3; with at least one being no salt/low sodium – you have to be careful that the soup doesn’t get too salty with all the canned broth)
  • 1 can Italian-style stewed or diced tomatoes (I added 2, one with Italian seasoning and one without)
  • 1 C sliced carrots (I never measure my carrots, I just take handfuls, give them a random dicing and toss them in)
  • 1 can great northern beans, undrained (I used dried beans.  I soaked them overnight and then dumped in about a cup and a half)
  • 2 small zucchini (I omitted this because I didn’t have it)
  • 2 cups spinach (one time I used fresh spinach and it was great, another time I used frozen and it too was great)
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp salt (I omitted the salt and then let people add to taste)
  • I also added – rosemary, oregano, basil, paprika, and cumin
  • 1 C cooked pasta

Brown the sausage and onions together (or throw it into the crockpot raw- I’ve done it both ways because I’m lazy).   Add in the rest of the ingredients, stirring well.   I cooked it on low for 8 hours (or high for 6, depending the strength of your crock pot).   I serve this with either fresh butterhorns or cornbread.  At the end of cooking the soup add in about a cup of cooked pasta, I used penne because that’s what I had, but a smaller pasta would be better.  I’ve made this soup with and without the pasta.  I liked the pasta and so did my dad, but Dave and my mom didn’t really like the pasta.  So maybe make it on the side and people can add it if they want.  Or not, no biggie.

So good!

Dump trucks and cats

My mom recently sent me some pictures of Ajax when he spent the weekend out at the farm and I just had to share.  My mom explained that their good friends, Mary and Jeff, gave Ajax a large power wheel in the shape of a dump truck.  My parent’s said he absolutely loved it and went exploring all over the place.

One of his favorite adventures, however, involved a new barn kitten my parents got.  A very friendly kitten (I mean ridiculously laid back kitty).  Ajax played with this cat for over a half hour.  He would pick it up and carry it to his truck and plop it into the bed and then try to drive off.  As soon as he hit the gas, however, the cat would leap from the truck.   Ajax would then dutifully go and retrieve the cat and bring it back to the truck.   My mom said that the odd thing was, the cat never tried to run away from Ajax, but allowed him to carry the darn thing back and forth.  On top of that the dogs followed Ajax back and forth each time he went to get the cat.  My parents said it was the funniest thing to watch as Ajax really was very gentle with the cat.

yes, that cat is upside down.

Halloween Part 2

Halloween was a great success this year!    My mom and dad came over for dinner and then we suited up Ajax in his costume.   All four of us took him to some of our neighbors and then my mom stayed home to pass out candy and my dad, Dave, and I took Ajax serious trick-or-treating.  The weather actually held out, it was overcast and cold, but no rain.   Ajax totally got the hang of things this year and was so excited going from house to house.  A few masks did scare him, but we did a good job pointing out that they were just people in masks and that such things were funny and not scarey.   He seemed to buy this.

Everyone complimented him on his costume and one little girl took one look at Ajax and said, oh you’re Woody.  Ajax just kept walking and said, yea that’s right, I am.   We went strong for over an hour, but by 7 pm Ajax was asking us to carry his treats for him and we decided to head home to see how grandma was fairing.   We actually let Ajax have a piece of candy this year and this was clearly a highlight of his night.

Overall, Halloween as excellent.  Everyone had a blast and we’re excited at how into Halloween Ajax was this year.
