No excuses

Dave said that my lack of posts has been ridiculous.  I apologize.  I’m tired.

This past week has been pretty busy, though I don’t think we’ve done much.   This weekend we kind of bummed around the house.  We cleaned and cooked and did the obligatory laundry.  Saturday ended up being warm enough where we walked up to the park.   Ajax had a blast, but Dave had to carry him on his shoulders on the walk back home as he was pretty tired.  Ajax thought the ride was awesome.

I think Ajax is in the midst of a growth spurt because he’s been eating a ton.   Tonight dinner just didn’t get made so we grabbed McDonalds on our way back from the store (I had great intentions).  Ajax can put away an entire 4 piece chicken nugget happy meal and still ask for more.   Dave and I just starred.

I’m also planning Ajax’s third birthday party for this Saturday.  It was slightly/kind of last minute.  We’re actually doing two parties- one up north over Easter weekend (a joint bday with another little cousin, Tyler) and one at our house, as my family couldn’t make it up north for the Easter weekend.   I honestly cannot believe my little guy is going to be three.

Right now Ajax is all about baby Noomi.  During dinner the other night he asked if he could pat my tummy as he wanted to pat Noomi.  He talks about her like she’s already here.  Tonight when I was matching socks he picked up one of his own and said, I think this is to small for me… it can be baby Noomi’s sock.  How cute, eh?

Forest monsters

Last week when Dave and Ajax got home, Dave shut the back door and proceeded into the house.  After he shut the door, however, Ajax ran into the back room and locked the door, the whole time lecturing Dave about safety and keeping the deer out of the house.

Last Friday after we had put Ajax to bed I was standing in the kitchen making a cup of tea and realized that Ajax was sing-talking.  I thought he was calling for me and went in to check on him.  He said that he was singing his car song (he’s really into making up songs lately) and then he asked me to go turn on the TV so that it would keep the deer away.

So ok.  Here’s what I’ve gathered from multiple deer related conversations I’ve had with Ajax:  1) My son is concerned that deer are going to get into our home and harm him/me/Dave/etc, and 2) he has no idea what deer are.   I have no clue where this came from, but I guess it popped up over a week ago.  He is constantly on high alert for “deer” and are always warning us to watch out for them.  Dave and I have each tried to reassure him that deer are friendly woodland creatures, but I don’t think he believes us for some reason.

Rite Aid

I have been out of the drugstore game for way too long.  I’m still couponing don’t worry.  But lately I’ve been focusing on lowering my grocery bill and cooking/baking.   It’s also helped that we’ve been living off our stockpile as I have not really bought any bathroom or personal products in …. I don’t remember when.   The thought of paying full price for something makes me cringe.

For example, the other day I was grocery shopping and purchased three bags of frozen veggies.  When I got up to pay the cashier noted that my coupons had actually expired!  I asked her to put the items back because I couldn’t use my coupons, she responded by saying, but they’re still on sale – $1.25.  I near shouted- $1.25!  I’m not paying that much for frozen veggies that’s way too much (as my coupon would have made them $0.25/each).  When I relayed this story to Dave, with quite a bit of horror/shock-outrage, he said I needed to calm down a bit and that if I wanted to buy veggies for $1.25 that was … like ok.

Anywho, back on track – I made it a goal to start buying diapers and baby items now so here was my chance to get back into it –

  • (3) Pampers Jumbo pack diapers on sale for $9.99/each
  • Total before  coupons $29.97
  • After coupons I paid $10.47 and got back $15 +UP Rewards

I took the $15 in UP Rewards and headed back to R.A. for this transaction.

Transaction 1.

  • (2) Total Reach toothbrushes – reg. $4.99, on sale for $2.99
  • (6) Suave body washes – reg. $2.79, on sale for $1.99
  • Total before coupons was – $17.92
  • After coupons – $11.94
  • Used $10 in UPs from the Pampers and paid only $1.94 out of pocket.  Got back $5 in +UP Rewards.

Transaction 2.

  • (2) Charmin Basic 12 roll TP – reg. $8.49, on sale for $5.97
  • (1) Carefree liners – reg. $1.49, on sale for $1.00
  • Total before coupons was – $12.94
  • After coupons – $10.94
  • Used $10 in UPs from above/Pampers transaction and paid $1.72 out of pocket.  Still have $2 + UP Rewards to use.

I thought I would share my plan.  If you’re gonna coupon you had better be organized (this of course doesn’t always go according to plan, but in a perfect world…).   I like to write out my drugstore transactions, but prefer excel for my grocery list.

Weekend recap

Michigan is in the midst of a heat wave.  It should not be 75-80 degrees in mid-March.  I think technically it’s still winter, right?   Good thing we splurged on a fancy new snow blower this year, which Dave got to use all of two times.  Oh well.

Saturday morning Dave let me sleep in and then made us a wonderful egg breakfast.   Ajax and I then ran to Meijer for some groceries and to purchase a mop so that Dave could clean up the basement properly after all the work.   I didn’t even realize that we didn’t own a mop… I just swiffer.   Ajax was very good at Meijer and chatted away about everything and anything that caught his interest.  We spent quite a bit of time looking at the fish and he had me name each and every one.   When we got home I made us all some lunch and realized that I was pretty hungry while grocery shopping because I bought a ton of snacky, not on the list, items that normally would never make it into my basket.   After lunch Ajax and I played outside while Dave continued to work in the basement.  It was so nice outside it was ridiculous, I believe it hit a solid 75.

Ajax has been referring to himself lately in the third person, specifically as a “working man.”  (ie.  working man’s going to bed now, working man’s gotta poop, etc).  Well, “working man” was also dead set on picking up all the dog poop in our yard.  He specifically said that this was guys work, so obviously mom’s couldn’t do it, but I could watch and assist when necessary.  Ajax spent over an hour in the backyard picking up dog poop with his blue shovel and then loading it into his dump truck.  Now let me clarify- by “dog poop” Ajax was referring to the soagy leaves that litter our backyard.  He started off trying to jump over the numerous puddles, but then gave up and plowed right through them.  I actually had to strip him down outside and put him into the bathtub for a quick scrub before laying him down for his nap, lol.

After nap we all ran to the mall because with this sneaking heat I realized that Ajax had no summer clothes (how negligent that a mom has waited until mid-March to purchase summer clothes for her child).   Dave watched Ajax on the playscape while I shopped and that worked out perfectly.  I also realized that I need to pick up some summer maternity clothes as the last time around I was pregnant during the winter, bah.   Luckily my cousin had given me some of her maternity clothes and that included a few skirts.

Today has also been busy.  Ajax and I went to buy the Sunday paper, then we all headed to Meijer because I forgot to buy a ton of things, we did lunch and now Ajax is napping.  It’s sunny and warm outside, so when the nino gets up I think I’ll clean out my car while he plays.  Good times!

Ajax kept wanting to dig up our yard, so I let him dig in the garden, which he found to be an excellent work site.

This is Ajax picking up the “poo.”

Chicken Pasta Bake

I’ve found a new awesome freezer meal, courtesy of Heavenly Homemakers and just had to share (my thoughts are in italics)!   When I stumbled across this recipe I was a little doubtful.   It calls for a basic white sauce using milk and my track record with such sauces has been so disastrous, that if I even mention a white sauce for dinner Dave cringes (that may be an exaggeration, but I’ve made some spectacular messes of white sauces).   This one however is so easy that even I managed to pull it off.  All three of us agreed that it was a winner and Ajax even ate the broccoli that was mixed in.  I told him they were trees and that dinosaurs LOVE trees!  He gobbled them up.

  • 2 C cooked chicken, cut into bite sized pieces
  • 2 1/2 C whole wheat pasta
  • 3 C whole milk (I used 2% as that’s what we had)
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt
  • I added in more seasonings- cumin, a little pepper, paprika, etc.
  • 1/4 C grated parmesan cheese
  • 4 ounces softened cream cheese (I added a little less than 4 ounces)
  • Shredded cheese
  • Green veggie

In a large cooking pot, combine cooked chicken, uncooked pasta, milk, and seasonings.  Cook over medium-high heat, stirring constantly until the pasta is tender (the starch from the pasta will thicken the milk creating a creamy sauce).  I left my sauce a tiny bit runny as I stuck this in the freezer and wanted to be sure if was liquidy enough when I cooked it.  Note:  at first your gonna think, this isn’t working I’m just stirring milk around a pot, but keep stirring, once the sauce starts thickening it’ll go fast and you want to be sure to stir stir stir or the bottom will burn… think 10 – 12 minutes or so.

Remove cooking pot from heat.  Stir in parmesan cheese and cream cheese till mixed through.  I also added in fresh, steamed broccoli, chopped.     Pour pasta mixture into a casserole dish (9×13).  Sprinkle a little cheese on top and bake in oven at 350 for about 15 minutes.  Or, you can stop after adding it to the casserole dish, cover and freeze.  To cook, just thaw and bake at 350 for about 30-40 min, or till heated through.  I can’t wait to get a few of these into the freezer for my maternity leave.

I made two of these dishes. One I mixed the veggies through, but Dave isn’t a fan of broccoli, so for this one I just put it on top to one side and it was great.

We’re home

So Ajax and I are home and our house has a new pipe in the basement, under the cement floor, leading outside.  Dave said that it was terribly dusty and smelly and he was glad we weren’t home.   The plumbers discovered another problem when they were digging up our basement.  Some sewer line work we had had done in 2010 was installed incorrectly.  So Dave spent a good portion of his day dealing with the company that did that, who finally agreed to come back and re-do the job (correctly this time).   Goodness.

Ajax had so much fun over his grandparent’s house.   As both my mom and sister had to work, he was with my dad both days.  They went exploring, used the big tractor to dig holes, they tracked turkeys and deer (very stealthy), fed the horses, and even did lunch one day at McDonalds.

My dad also bought Ajax his first glove and baseball.   My dad was an avid baseball player and has been waiting for this moment (I think since Ajax was born).  I actually played T-Ball when I was little  and my dad coached.   So yea, he was pretty excited.   Thank you family for having us out and watching Ajax!

Yes, playing ball in the house.
Ground ball.
Emily sent me this text at about 4ish. Nino and Grandpa asleep on the couch after a busy day.

Weekend updates

We have had a very quiet weekend and although I seem to say this every quiet weekend, I so enjoyed it.   Our weeks are so hectic and busy that by the time the weekend rolls around I just want to settle in and be with my family.   Yesterday was a slow moving day, Ajax and I did a little cooking, and we did some mandatory laundry and cleaning.   Dave got hisweekly comic shot and did a little work.   We also ran a meal over to friends who just had a baby.   After Ajax went to bed Dave and I sat down to watch our Net Flix movie, only to have it stop 10 minutes in due to a large scratch.  Oh well.

Today we have been a bit more productive, Ajax and I made waffles for breakfast, with enough extra to freeze.   We did some more cleaning and because it was so beautiful outside we even walked up to the grocery store to buy our newspapers and pick up a few things for the week.  Dave and Ajax are actually outside right now playing and I can hear Ajax racing around with his dump truck as I have the kitchen windows open.   On a side note, I think our constant reminders to Ajax to use his words is finally kicking in.  Now, however, he’ll say things that seem odd coming out of a three (or almost 3) year old’s mouth.  For example, he’ll say that he’s extremely frustrated with something and then he can generally explain why. lol.

Tonight Ajax and I are heading out to my parent’s house and will stay there till Tuesday as we are having some work done in our basement and Dave doesn’t want Ajax and I in the house in case the dust is bad.   You may be asking, why are we having work done in the basement?  Well, our house is no longer up for sale and we have yanked our listing (we did not have the most amicable relationship with our realtor and the reality of the housing market is that unless we could bring $50,000 to the table it just wasn’t going to move.  I don’t know about you, but I don’t have 50K sitting around, lol).   So that brings us to our second option: renting.   Based on our comfort level, we have decided that hopefully come the end of August, beginning of September we will be able to safely move to Lansing (renting, of course) and put our home up for rent, most likely utilizing a rental management company as Lansing is almost 2 hours away.   As we will be renting, small annoyances that we have always just dealt with should be taken care of before renting- hence the basement project.

Lookin’ good cutie

At dinner Dave said, Ajax you look tired tonight.  Ajax immediately replied, No I don’t, I look good!

What a cutie.  Ajax’s good mood has continued and he’s been quite the little charmer.  We have very few timeouts now and have been focusing on using our words and taking and Ajax is doing very well.  He’s still a negotiator.  If you say, Ajax you can have one cookie, he’ll immediately say, How about two?

Weekends

This weekend was quite relaxing.

I didn’t leave the house once yesterday and it was glorious!  Dave and Ajax ran to the grocery store and library.  Dave said Ajax did wonderful and had fun putting together the puzzles.  We did make whole wheat pretzels and they were great.  Ajax didn’t really get the whole rolling them out process, but we still had fun.

Today we had a bit more going on.  Ajax and I went grocery shopping and then picked up the Sunday paper.  Ajax did great at both stops and chatted away the entire time.   We also had a Nader family reunion today and there were probably about 75 people or so present, with lots of little kids for Ajax to play with.  He had so much fun and ran nonstop for almost three hours.   He ran so much that he didn’t even mind pausing to eat and drink a little.  He went to bed at 7 pm and was out like a light.

I was so excited to put Ajax into this outfit for some reason. But Dave said he looked like a nerd.

I was so excited to put Ajax into this outfit, I thought it was so cute.  Dave, however, was not a fan.

These are actually just a few of the cousin’s kids that we could wrangle… and these are just the younger kids.

My cousin Angie is actually farther along than I, she’s due in late June.  I couldn’t believe how much bigger I was than her, lol.
