Hawk Island Park

Hawk Island Park is within walking distance of our home and while we’ve driven by it a dozen times we hadn’t had the time to explore it until this past Sunday.   Dave and I loaded up the kids, slathered on the sun screen and drove the 2 miles to the park.   It turned out to be a cute little park and after parking we walked a short path down to the beach.  They actually had a large splash pad, but Ajax opted for the lake.   We dropped our blankets and cooler and brought the kids into the water.  Noomi loved being held with her feet splashing.  She also liked sitting on Dave’s lap and scooping up sand.   She then had me walk her up and down the beach, she would walk along the sand and then knee deep in the water.  Back and forth, back and forth.  My back is so sun burnt.   Ajax and Dave dug holes in the sand and filled up the dump truck which Ajax zipped all around.   It turned out to be a lovely day and everyone had a great time!

The life guards were very strict and every hour everyone had to exit the water and sit in the grass while they did a security/rules review.

Zombie Walk Detroit_ 2011

Today was our fourth trip to Zombie Walk Detroit!

Our plan got a bit side tracked as my sister and her friend came in from Brooklyn to go with us, however, the walk was rescheduled to a later time and they weren’t able to stay for the event.  Because they were in town though we made the most of our time and went to my grandpa Nader’s house for lunch.  Dave stayed home to get some work done.   Ajax did very well and had a lot of fun playing with his aunt Emily.   After my grandpa’s house, Emily and her friend headed home and I took Ajax home to nap.

My cousin, DJ, came over to our house and went to the walk with us.   This year it was in Royal Oak, not as cool as Detroit.  The starting place was a park so Ajax was pretty much set.  I watched him as he played and Dave ran around taking pictures and mingling with the undead.  There was a good turn out this year.  I was wondering how Ajax would handle the makeup and characters this year, but he didn’t care in the least.  This really is a very good family event and there were a ton of kids for him to play with.  The goal of the walk isn’t to scare anyone, though the zombies did attack a Channel Seven news van. lol.

Dave took a lot more pictures that I’ll share later.

Capturing the excitment

I’ve been trying to get a video of Ajax playing with his Zu Zu pet because honestly it is the cutest darn thing ever.  He will chase it all over the kitchen and living room and just chatter away at it.   I let him take it over to Ms. Karen’s house today and she said that he and Brandon (a three year old that she watches also) had so much fun chasing it around the house, she said it was hilarious.

Tonight I was able to take this video and just thought I’d share –

Zombie Walk Detroit

Today was a quiet day around the house.  I did some laundry and basically bummed around.   I should have gone grocery shopping as we have no food in the house.  Ajax was glad to be home and ran around the house playing with his toys and asking for yap-ples (apples).  When we were up north he kept demanding apples and then when I would cut one up for him, he would take a bite and then toss the rest at the dog.  Darn kid.

We hung around the house till 2 today and then headed to downtown Detroit for the 2010 Zombie Walk (Dave is actually doing their website).  There were hundreds of zombies in Detroit today and Dave was in seventh heaven.   Ajax did great and even learned a new word, yes – Zombie.  Ajax wasn’t phased at all by the undead mass and was actually quite entertained by it all.  He said hi to everyone and waved.

There was of course a Lions game so we ended up getting stuck between the zombie walk and the game letting out.  Since the crowd was so massive we decided to eat dinner downtown to waste some time.  Before our meal came I took Ajax to the restroom to wash his hands and there were three zombies in there.   The first thing Ajax said when he saw them was – Zombies!  The women were very impressed.   Next year we need to dress up, lol.

Yes that is red on his face. He got bloodied.

Capes

Ajax has a green hooded towel that we bought him the last time we were at Ikea.  Usually he’s not that interested in it.  After getting into PJs I would place it on his head like a cape, but he never really thought that much of it.  Tonight, however, after bath time, after PJs, Ajax ran around the house with the towel like a superman cape.  He thought it was the funniest thing ever.  He kept pulling it down over his eyes and zipping up and down the hall way.   He was pretty pumped up.

Fall and the Zoo

Yesterday was summer and today it is Fall in Michigan.

It was a cool 60 degrees and though the weatherman predicted rain it held off and was just kind of cloudy, which made it a perfect day for the Zoo!  Although Ajax went last summer this was the first time in a long time for both Dave and myself.  Honestly I can’t really remember the last time I was at the Zoo.   We packed up the wagon and a lunch and headed out!

It was a great day, but Ajax is still a little young and didn’t have the patience to really see any of the animals (I thought he’d be a bit more interested as his favorite book right now is Goodnight Gorilla).  The only animals he really seemed interested in were the tigers, warthogs, peacocks, and of course the squirrels.   He called almost everything a “kitty” or “squirrel” and seemed quite pleased with himself.  He told the tiger- “kitty bite!” and threw his wafer at the enclosure (he’s sharing).

His absolute favorite part of the zoo was the play scape.  We spent a good 45 minutes there before checking out the butterfly/birdhouse, which Ajax ran right through.  Really if it was up to him he would have just run all over the place.  We spent a good deal of the day chasing after him.

Ajax is also getting quite the vocabulary.  This morning at breakfast he kept asking Dave – “Daddy, bite please.”  He wanted Dave to share his eggs, he of course didn’t want the food on his plate, but instead wanted Daves.    It was pretty cute.

I didn't realize that I was in this picture, but otherwise Ajax would've fallen right off!
His favorite part ... the play area.
Ajax thought the peacocks were pretty cool. They were wandering outside the dining area.

This guy was pretty cool too!

The Lake

What an exciting day for the little man!  We officially did away with the paci today, cold turkey.  Ajax was starting to wake up in the night and would only go back to bed if Dave or I went downstairs, searched around in the dark for another paci and gave it to him.  After a few weeks of interrupted sleep, we were both done with it.  It’s only been one day and it’s been a bit tough, but I think in the long run we will all be happier.

Today we also headed out to the lake for a small get together with close family friends to celebrate a graduation.  We had a great time and ate a ton.  Ajax ate the entire time we were there (growth spurt?).  He ate so much that I began getting concerned that he was just eating way too much (he had a hotdog and some hamburger, strawberries, chips, party mix, cheerios, and of course ketchup).  He never stopped, he was a machine.  Ajax also went swimming and then took his first boat ride.  He loved it.

Hammock time!
Getting ready for a ride! We couldn't get him off the boat.

This was Ajax's post for most of the boat ride.
The lake was very calm as it had just gotten done raining. There was mist rising up off it and it was pretty cool.
This was the first time Ajax got to wear his life vest, I think he thought it was pretty cool.

Kensington

Today it was either an art fair in Plymouth or the petting farm at Kensington Park.  Although I was all for the art fair (I haven’t been to one all summer!), I figured Ajax and Dave wouldn’t enjoy it that much so we headed to the park.   We got there well before noon so it wasn’t too hot or crowded, which was nice.  Ajax loves animals and had a great time.  He saw piglets, lambs and ducks, and petted goats and sheep.  While he was petting one goat, the goat’s ear twitched to shoo a fly away, well this action scared Ajax and he screamed, pulled his hand back and leapt back from the fence.  It was pretty funny, you’d think the goat nipped at him or something.

Throughout the farm we kept pointing at the animals and then making their appropriate noise.  Here was the running commentary throughout- oh Ajax looks a piggy, what does a piggy say- oink oink!!  so on and so forth.  Luckily every other person at the farm had a small nino too so the commentary was being repeated all over the farm.  Ajax said goat a few times and sheep, but mostly kept referring to the animals as dogs.

After exploring the farm we found a shady spot by the lake and had the picnic lunch we’d brought.  Ajax ate some fruit, but wasn’t too interested in eating the sandwich I’d made him but he had tons of fun throwing potato chips off the blanket.  Oh well.

Father’s Day in Detroit

This weekend was fun and exciting, not so much with the quiet and rest which we had planned, but oh well!

Saturday we finally got our house, yard and garage back in order from the BBQ last weekend.  We also put a major dent in the mountain of laundry that had been piling up.  My parents were then nice enough to watch Ajax for a few hours so that Dave and I could have a date night.  We did dinner and a movie (The A-Team), while Ajax and my folks went to a BBQ with family.  Ajax had a blast with his cousins and loved playing with their toys.  Kids always love other people’s toys better.

Sunday we headed to downtown Detroit for the Detroit River Days, a large summer festival along the river.  It was a beautiful day and the crowd wasn’t that large.  Ajax had chicken shawarma and part of an elephant ear for lunch.  He also took his first ride on a carosel and loved it (I had to kind of drag him off it).  He also played in some interactive water features that were pretty neat.  We also got to explore two large ships, one of which belonged to the coast guard; Ajax loved the control room with all the flashing lights and switches.  He was pretty beat on the way home and zonked out.

The ship Dave wanted to explore.
This animal didn't move up and down, so Ajax was pretty ok with it.
Ajax thought sunglasses were pretty cool.

Having fun.
Ajax loved this water fountain.

Ajax wasn't too sure of this fountain, the water was pretty cold.
Enjoying an elephant ear while watching a jet sky show.
The city has done a lot of work along the river and I must admit it looks wonderful.

Benefits

Tonight we attended a benefits dinner to raise money for my aunt Susie who is undergoing treatment for breast cancer.  There were a lot of people there and a ton of kids!  A rough estimate of the total was over $5,000!

Ajax ran nonstop.  I couldn’t get him to settle down and eat anything as he would run and run and run (with each family member taking turns shadowing him), and then circle back to the table to take two bites of spaghetti and then would take off again.  My mom tied a little balloon to the back of his pants and he thought that was the funniest thing.   On the drive home he crashed big time, so that by the time we reached the house I gave him a super quick bath, sippy of milk and then bed.   I also won something in the auction (a summer cooler packed with fun stuffs) and I never win anything.
