Memorial Day 2013

I’m sitting on the couch watching a silly TV show, updating my blog and enjoying a moment of quiet.  Somehow good fortune is with us and both kids are taking naps simultaneously… I have no idea how that worked out.   We have had a very busy holiday weekend and I’m tired. lol.

On Saturday we were all up early and headed to Brooklyn for a farm clean up day.   My grandma Flo is up from Florida, most likely for good, and was so happy to see the kiddos.  Ajax walked in and gave her the biggest hug.   When we got there, my folks were finished up breakfast, so of course we sat down for second breakfast.  Noomi devoured an egg, toast, and a large piece of bacon for her second breakfast.    She has turned into quite the awesome eater.   We then all headed outside to get some work done.   Ajax took his jobs seriously – he did tractor work, he swept out the little red barn, and he helped take down some trees.   This was his favorite job – he kept saying, wow we’re really working hard here, eh?  And every time there was a small branch, he’d yell – that one’s mine!  It’s just my size!   He actually kept pace with us and worked outside as long as the adults were out.  We were quite impressed.   My mom fed us well and Noomi ended up eating a good portion of my burger at dinner.  We bathed the kids there and then loaded them into the car for the drive home.  We transferred them into bed and neither of them made a peep.

On Sunday both kids were up nice and early, so Dave and I took that opportunity to clean the house top to bottom!  By 10 am the house was sparkling, so we had an early breakfast and went to the zoo.   Potter Park Zoo is within walking distance from our home and very reasonably priced (only $4 for adults!!).  It’s a small zoo, compared to the Detroit zoo, but they still had lions, tigers, rinos, and penguins.  More than enough to impress us!  It was also nice with small kids, and just enough walking not to make everyone exhausted.  Dave did have to put Ajax on his shoulders on the walk back to the car, but overall he did wonderful.  Ajax’s favorite exhibit was the reptile house and he loved the turtles and fish.   The weather was also beautiful and Noomi watched everything and everyone with fascination.   We went home and had ice cream and then the kids fell asleep for 2.5 hours!   We got take out for dinner and let Ajax eat his in front of the TV watching cartoons (what the heck its a holiday).

Today everyone is quite exhausted, so we’re taking it very easy.  Plus it’s raining and cold (hovering in the mid/high 60s).  We brought Ajax’s John Deere Gator outside and he and I “worked” outside for over an hour.  We dug and filled in holes, moved rocks, and did multiple laps around the house checking out the various flowers.   Noomi also was determined enough and made it up the stairs to the second floor by herself (with Dave behind her the whole time).  I have a feeling we’re going to be doing a very easy dinner as well.

Photo update

At my last post the photos from my phone wouldn’t upload for some reason.  I’m not sure what I did but after playing around I finally got the pictures on the computer.   So here are some pictures from last weekend.

This week seemed to last forever, so glad the holiday weekend is almost upon us!

Weekends

The kiddos are growing up!

Last week when we were getting ready to leave the house, Ajax said, I don’t need to bring silkie to school with me, I only need her at night.  Woo hoo!  Till this time Ajax has always brought silkie to school for nap time and at four we’ve been kinda wondering when he would decide it wasn’t needed all the time.   It seems like we’re there.   I can’t believe how old he is getting.

Noomi is also growing up, ten months now and a year will be here so very soon!   She is a fast little crawler and will now pull herself up into the standing position.  She isn’t great at getting back down, but she’s getting there.   She is also starting to notice the stairs in our house, but again hasn’t really attempted them.  She is still incredibly loud and when she gets excited she waves/flaps her arms wildly.  The ladies at daycare told us that when she does that they say – Fly Away Noomi!  Fly Away!  It’s actually so funny to watch that Dave and I now say that to her as well.   So far she is saying – dada, mama, hi, and there.  She is also starting to point at things she wants, which is ridiculously cute.

This past weekend was quite busy.   On Saturday morning Ajax and I headed into town to see the dentist.  When the technician came out for Ajax I wasn’t sure he would go with her (as I was already sitting in the chair for my own cleaning), but to my surprise he went with her and did awesome.  I heard him talking and talking to her, it was so cute.   After the dentists we ran to Home Depot and bought a new stove for our Garden City house (as somehow the tenants broke the old one).  We then headed home to Lansing.   When we got home and Dave and I traded kids so that he and Ajax could do yard work and I took Noomi grocery shopping.  Dave then had the kids for the night and I met my mom and sister in Jackson for shopping, sushi, and a movie.

Sunday turned into a highly productive day- Ajax dug several holes in the backyard, Noomi did laps around the living room and pulled herself up on everything.  We got laundry folded and put away.  Dave got some work done.   I got some cooking done and then made an awesome dinner.  We also went on a bike ride and explored a new section of the Lansing River Trail near the zoo.  Ajax did wonderful; he didn’t fall once and Noomi sat up the whole time clutching the tray of the stroller.  She clapped and waved at everyone.

Playing catchup

Goodness where to begin.  You can tell it’s summer in Michigan.  The rain has finally slowed, flowers are up and the kids are restless, lol.

Last weekend I had to go to Chicago for work, so my parents were nice enough to pick up the kids on Sunday so that Dave and I could have a nice “date” night in Chicago.   It was the first time we’ve been away from Noomi, plus the kids stayed at my parent’s house, but they reported that the kids did wonderful.  Both zonked out and slept all night.  Ajax helped on the farm (what a hard worker) and Noomi yelled at the dogs.  You know when she was a smaller nina I was a little concerned that she didn’t make much noise.  Of course this is in comparison to Ajax, possibly the world’s loudest child.  Luckily she has found her voice and she is now a rival in the loud department.

Anyways, Dave and I had a wonderful time in Chicago and it was very nice having some couple time.   Our drives were also easy as we took a creative route home, winding through back streets through south Chicago until we hit Indiana.  Probably not the safest route, but at least we weren’t stuck for hours on the Eisenhower.

Fast forward and this past weekend Dave met his cousin at my folk’s house in Brooklyn to go turkey hunting and then the kids and I met him there later on Saturday (he was up and out the door at 3:30 am).    Ajax again had a blast working on the farm.  He raked hay and fed the horses, he washed all his dump trucks, and stepped in every mud puddle.   Noomi was a pistol and zipped all over the place.  She is getting to be quite a fast crawler and kept yelling at the dogs.  She also met the horses, but didn’t seem that impressed.

Growth spurt and crawling!

Ms. Noomi is clearly in a growth spurt.  Something clicked and she has not only mastered the pincher grasp, but she is now eating almost anything you can put in front of her – she has been eating pancakes, waffles, cheerios, and white bean and chicken soup (which was also one of Ajax’s favorite first meals).   She is also getting to the age where she wants whatever you are eating and angrily demands a bite.  It is adorable.  We will phase out the purees (which I of course have a ton of) and start introducing various finger foods.  I’m pretty excited as I hate having to buy those little tubs of food.  She is also getting a sippy cup, but also refuses to hold her bottle, lol.

Noomi also now knows how to crawl!!  She really started moving on 04/20 (Sat), though she isn’t in too much of a hurry.  She hasn’t quite gotten the hang of pulling herself up on things, but we certainly need to get a child gate for the stairs now.  Our little girl is getting so big!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle birthday party!

Ajax: I want a Ninja Turtle birthday party.

Me: What? NO.  You said you wanted a dragon party.

Ajax: Well, I want a Turtle party now.

Me: Absolutely not.

10 minutes later…

Me: Fine! Fine!  But this is it buddy, no more changing your mind!

* * * * *

This year I decided I wanted to go all out for Ajax’s fourth birthday.  By all out, I mean as all out as a noncrafty, working full time, gotta snag ideas from pinterest, type of party I could muster.  And as we are now in a larger house, it meant we could invite more people and not be sitting in each others laps.  Which of course added to the overall pressure of party planning.

I took Friday off to prep for the party and bake cupcakes.   I made way to many and now my coworkers are going to be very excited on Monday for TMNT cupcakes I’m sure.   I kept decorations pretty simple, again taking ideas from pinterest and more crafty persons.   Dave and my mother in law were on slime detail Friday night (which we gave out as favors, I used the Borax recipe, but to do over I would have used the non-Borax recipe for little ones).   We did a lot of the setting up on Friday night, which was wonderful, as Ajax had his first soccer practice Saturday morning (the party was at 2 pm).

This was the night before.  This was also the most organized I’ve been for a family function.  Normally I’m still in the kitchen when guests arrive and this time I did not want to be chained to a stove.   That’s why we embraced the KISS principle and kept it very simple- chips, dip, apples slices, carrots, pizza (open a bag and go).

Instead of buying helium balloons, this was my modification for table decorations.  Ajax thought they were pretty cool.

How awesome are these cupcakes?  Yes, a little amateur, but they are the first I have ever attempted and was quite proud.  The frosting, however, kept running and the white frosting bag busted, so everyone got blacks eyes.

For an activity, I set up the table with crayons, TMNT print offs, stickers (random, cheap stickers from the dollar store that the kids LOVED), and little paper bag books.  Plus, twizzlers in Mason jars, which the adults kept eating before the party, lol.

Skyping Papa after the party as he unfortunately couldn’t make it down for the party.  Ajax loved showing him all his presents.

Overall, Ajax had a great birthday party.  He had a ton of fun with his friends and cousins, he ran and played and was an excellent host.  He thanked everyone that came and gave big hugs when people left.

Birthday party – 3!

We had Ajax’s birthday party yesterday.  Celebrating three years!  I cannot believe it, I really can’t.  Three!   We’re trying to get him accustomed to saying that he is three now, but so far he has steadfastly refused and declared that he is still two.  Technically he is correct as his birthday isn’t till Tuesday. lol.

The weather was cold and wet, so we were stuck inside the house, which was a shame as we were just enjoying above average temperatures… oh well, everyone had a great time and we enjoyed some good food, and of course Ajax had a blast, which was of course the whole point!

Ajax had fun showing everyone his toys and tractors.  He got a little embarrassed when everyone sang him happy birthday, but smiled and giggled throughout.   I made him his favorite cake – angel food cake with fresh strawberries- and he loved it.  We also made homemade lemon bars, which Ajax had fun making.

Thank you family for coming out and celebrating with us!

Opening presents

No excuses

Dave said that my lack of posts has been ridiculous.  I apologize.  I’m tired.

This past week has been pretty busy, though I don’t think we’ve done much.   This weekend we kind of bummed around the house.  We cleaned and cooked and did the obligatory laundry.  Saturday ended up being warm enough where we walked up to the park.   Ajax had a blast, but Dave had to carry him on his shoulders on the walk back home as he was pretty tired.  Ajax thought the ride was awesome.

I think Ajax is in the midst of a growth spurt because he’s been eating a ton.   Tonight dinner just didn’t get made so we grabbed McDonalds on our way back from the store (I had great intentions).  Ajax can put away an entire 4 piece chicken nugget happy meal and still ask for more.   Dave and I just starred.

I’m also planning Ajax’s third birthday party for this Saturday.  It was slightly/kind of last minute.  We’re actually doing two parties- one up north over Easter weekend (a joint bday with another little cousin, Tyler) and one at our house, as my family couldn’t make it up north for the Easter weekend.   I honestly cannot believe my little guy is going to be three.

Right now Ajax is all about baby Noomi.  During dinner the other night he asked if he could pat my tummy as he wanted to pat Noomi.  He talks about her like she’s already here.  Tonight when I was matching socks he picked up one of his own and said, I think this is to small for me… it can be baby Noomi’s sock.  How cute, eh?

Forest monsters

Last week when Dave and Ajax got home, Dave shut the back door and proceeded into the house.  After he shut the door, however, Ajax ran into the back room and locked the door, the whole time lecturing Dave about safety and keeping the deer out of the house.

Last Friday after we had put Ajax to bed I was standing in the kitchen making a cup of tea and realized that Ajax was sing-talking.  I thought he was calling for me and went in to check on him.  He said that he was singing his car song (he’s really into making up songs lately) and then he asked me to go turn on the TV so that it would keep the deer away.

So ok.  Here’s what I’ve gathered from multiple deer related conversations I’ve had with Ajax:  1) My son is concerned that deer are going to get into our home and harm him/me/Dave/etc, and 2) he has no idea what deer are.   I have no clue where this came from, but I guess it popped up over a week ago.  He is constantly on high alert for “deer” and are always warning us to watch out for them.  Dave and I have each tried to reassure him that deer are friendly woodland creatures, but I don’t think he believes us for some reason.

Weekend recap

Michigan is in the midst of a heat wave.  It should not be 75-80 degrees in mid-March.  I think technically it’s still winter, right?   Good thing we splurged on a fancy new snow blower this year, which Dave got to use all of two times.  Oh well.

Saturday morning Dave let me sleep in and then made us a wonderful egg breakfast.   Ajax and I then ran to Meijer for some groceries and to purchase a mop so that Dave could clean up the basement properly after all the work.   I didn’t even realize that we didn’t own a mop… I just swiffer.   Ajax was very good at Meijer and chatted away about everything and anything that caught his interest.  We spent quite a bit of time looking at the fish and he had me name each and every one.   When we got home I made us all some lunch and realized that I was pretty hungry while grocery shopping because I bought a ton of snacky, not on the list, items that normally would never make it into my basket.   After lunch Ajax and I played outside while Dave continued to work in the basement.  It was so nice outside it was ridiculous, I believe it hit a solid 75.

Ajax has been referring to himself lately in the third person, specifically as a “working man.”  (ie.  working man’s going to bed now, working man’s gotta poop, etc).  Well, “working man” was also dead set on picking up all the dog poop in our yard.  He specifically said that this was guys work, so obviously mom’s couldn’t do it, but I could watch and assist when necessary.  Ajax spent over an hour in the backyard picking up dog poop with his blue shovel and then loading it into his dump truck.  Now let me clarify- by “dog poop” Ajax was referring to the soagy leaves that litter our backyard.  He started off trying to jump over the numerous puddles, but then gave up and plowed right through them.  I actually had to strip him down outside and put him into the bathtub for a quick scrub before laying him down for his nap, lol.

After nap we all ran to the mall because with this sneaking heat I realized that Ajax had no summer clothes (how negligent that a mom has waited until mid-March to purchase summer clothes for her child).   Dave watched Ajax on the playscape while I shopped and that worked out perfectly.  I also realized that I need to pick up some summer maternity clothes as the last time around I was pregnant during the winter, bah.   Luckily my cousin had given me some of her maternity clothes and that included a few skirts.

Today has also been busy.  Ajax and I went to buy the Sunday paper, then we all headed to Meijer because I forgot to buy a ton of things, we did lunch and now Ajax is napping.  It’s sunny and warm outside, so when the nino gets up I think I’ll clean out my car while he plays.  Good times!

Ajax kept wanting to dig up our yard, so I let him dig in the garden, which he found to be an excellent work site.

This is Ajax picking up the “poo.”
