Family Vaca Part I

We are home from vacation and I must admit it was quite nice to sleep in my own bed last night.  I’ll be posting our trip in parts, since we did quite a bit!

We hit the road last Saturday for Mackinaw City.   From our house it was about a five or six hour drive.   Ajax did wonderful, simply wonderful!  We were a little concerned as car rides have not been his favorite lately, but honestly we couldn’t have asked for a more well behaved child.  We stopped for lunch and then stopped at a rest area to stretch our legs.  The rest area had a little nature hike up to a scenic overlook which was nice.  Ajax was quite the adventure baby and refused to hold my hand up the trail.

We got into Mackinaw around 5-ish, checked into our hotel and then wandered into town for dinner.  We found an excellent pizza joint and then did a little window shopping.   Our first night at the hotel was a bit rough as Ajax woke at 2:30 am and then basically refused to go back to sleep.  By 6 am Dave declared that the Indish family was up for the day and we got dressed and went to breakfast.

I guess we can’t really blame the kid for waking up, the hotel was horribly creepy.  Now, I’m not saying it was the worst hotel in the world, just the worst I have ever stayed in.   Dave agreed that it was also the worst he had ever stayed in too.  I didn’t do a very good job researching hotels in the area and made a snap decision regarding our accommodations, this obviously was a mistake.   I beat myself up for a while, but Dave assured me that this was how family memories are made and we would never forget the horrible, creepy, and downright scary hotel that I made my family sleep in.

At the rest stop-

This is the only pic of the hotel room I took, Ajax kept moving the Bible around to different drawers.

Michigan

While we were driving home through Tawas I saw this Christmas tree out on the pier and had Dave pull over so that I could snap a picture from the car.  It really is lovely up north.

I thought this was a funny face. He was eating eggs (which he loves), but he makes this face for things even if he likes it.

Chicago

Well Dave and I are back from Chicago.  What a cool city.  Yesterday we were up at 4 am and on the road to Chi town.   Dave wandered around the city and explored the Sears tower while I was in my meeting.  I was done around 3 or so, and from there we checked into our hotel which was also right downtown.  We tried to find an FAO Schwartz to get Ajax a toy, but to my surprise there are actually no more FAO’s in Chicago, they’ve all closed.  The concierge suggested the Disney store, but we have those in Michigan.  Oh well, he got some books.    We met up with a friend for dinner and walked around some more.  By8 pm, however, Dave and I were crashing.  By 9 pm we were passed out in our hotel.  So wild and crazy.

This morning we got on the road fairly early and were home by 3:30.  We both missed the kid terribly and are quite happy to be home.  My mom and dad babysat for us, thank you again, and they reported that he was an excellent baby the entire time.
